How much cleaning should you do after you've moved out of your home? You're leaving the place, so it isn't technically your home anymore. But some attention should be paid to moving cleaning. Cleaning up the mess of moving out is arguably good manners, but there's far more to it than that.

A Comprehensive Look

When every piece of furniture has been moved out; every knickknack and ornament has been packed away; closets and cupboards have been emptied—your former home is now completely empty. You can now take a comprehensive look at any trace you've inadvertently left behind. There might be small stains on the carpet, discolored patches on the walls, and more than a few places that were overlooked when you dusted and vacuumed.

For Renters

A thorough, comprehensive cleaning isn't just a generous act for whoever is moving in after you. When you rent your home, deep cleaning can be essential to getting your security deposit back, so there's a clear financial incentive for getting the job done. There are companies that specialize in end-of-lease cleaning, so you may want to farm the job out. Be sure to factor this into both your budget and your moving schedule. Your chosen moving company may be able to recommend a cleaning company, or might even provide the service themselves.

For Vendors

Of course, getting a security deposit back isn't relevant when you've sold your home. By the time you move out, escrow has been completed and the sale is closed. The purchasers will have a reasonable expectation that the property will be in the same condition as when they inspected it, and failure to adhere to this may create a contractual liability for you as the vendor. Some cleaning is needed, but your work can be minimized if you take steps to protect the property from mess and damage while moving out.

Protective Measures

Make sure flooring is protected during moving, and this can be easily and inexpensively achieved. Flattened cardboard boxes offer necessary protection and traction, so nobody will lose their footing while carrying a heavy item. This is especially important when moving during inclement weather. Exercise caution with doorways and staircase banisters. These minor measures will prevent the moving process from creating much mess, so cleaning the space will be relatively quick and simple once all items have been removed.

For renters, exhaustive cleaning can be essential for getting your security deposit back. For owners it is a different matter, although some cleaning is required, with the expected condition of the property often written into the contract of sale.
